Lifeguard

The City of Athens is seeking  individuals who enjoy working outdoors to join our pool staff. This is a seasonal position expected to last about 120 days and is covered by the Fair Labor Standards Act. The starting pay rate is $11.00/hr. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled.

Job Summary:

To ensure and maintain swimmer safety by monitoring guest behavior, pool conditions, and enforcing safety rules. This is a temporary, seasonal position in the Arts, Parks, and Recreation Department.


Job Duties:

  • Maintain current certification of American Red Cross Lifeguard*, CPR/First-Aid/ AED.
  • Maintains constant surveillance of patrons in the facility; acts immediately and appropriately to secure safety of patrons in the event of an emergency.
  • Presents professional appearance and a good attitude.
  • Responsible for teaching swim lessons.
  • Be available to work nightly pool parties during the season.
  • Preforms various cleaning duties during opening and closing of each day.
  • Assists in getting the pool up and ready for the season.
  • Attends all Lifeguard Inservice Trainings, Swim Lesson Training, and Staff Meetings.
  • Provide assistance to patrons when appropriate or necessary.
  • Work cooperatively with other coworkers and supervisory staff.
  • Exceeds Visual Awareness Trainings conducted by supervisory staff.
  • Perform any other related duties enacted by supervisory staff.


Job Specifications and Qualifications:

  • Lifeguards must be strong swimmers, possess excellent observation skills, and exhibit strong emergency response skills.
  • Candidates must have reasonable weekend availability. 


*If you work 450 hours between opening and closing of pool (end of May to end of August) AND have a valid lifeguard certification through September 2022, you will be eligible for a reimbursement for your lifeguard certification or recertification.


The City may consider any other equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
